The New Nightmare Freddy is an entity that exists beyond the confines of the Nightmare on Elmstreet movies. A manifestation of evil, powered by hate and fear, much stronger than his 'fictional' counterpart. At first he emerges in increments, promptly targeting Wes Craven, his creator, and even Robert England too. But the thorn in Freddy's side is Heather Langencamp, who played Nancy in the first Nightmare and then again in the third sequel. Freddy wants to find a permanent threshold to the mortal sphere, using Heather's young son as the conduit. He proceeds in oblique fashion, attempting to vilify Heather, trying to turn all of those around her against her.

The New Nightmare version of Freddy is less of a caricature than the 'fictional' one. No wise-cracking. He's all business. He's a little bulkier, more shadowy. He kills quickly and violently, without preamble, or else orchestrates his violent agenda, in trademark fashion, without virtue of physical presence. He's a kind of protoype version never intended for human production. Heather is eventually drawn into Freddy's demonic lair, the labyrinthine boiler room, also an aggrandized version of itself, and she proves that she's hasn't lost her touch. Freddy is apparently defeated again, but, being Freddy, there's always some loophole.
